Edison Elementary School
Dylan Alvarez continues to hold on to the top spot
for the 9th week in a row with a chess club rating of 911 but Justen Gebala is
closing in as he had jump over 100 rating points in the past 3 weeks. Richard
Martini has also gained about 75 points. Edison has its first school challenge
of the year with Providencia on January 22.
Luther Burbank Middle School
David Lopez continues to be the top spot with
chess club rating a 1013 with Mitchel Fernando holding on to 2nd with a
club rating of 918. Ian Flinchbaugh rounds out the top 3 with a rating of 882
but Matthew Powers may have the power to clinch one of the top 3 real soon.
Luther Burbank Middle School also has 3 new chess club members Jarel Dilnisio,
Jake Gonzalez, & Sevak Karapetyan.
Providencia Elementary
School
Providencia Elementary School has had some changes
at the top with Nicholas Tong taking the top spot with a club rating of 1120.
This is the highest rating out of all the participating schools at this time.
Alex Ramirez holds the 2nd spot with a club rating of 1002 and closing in on
Alex in 3rd is the highest rated girl of the chess club Stephanie Reyes with a
rating of 999. Some students like Preston Hernandez, Marco Salinas, &
Jocelyn Rieken have made a lot of progress in the past couple of weeks and
could be the next top 3 so look out Nick Alex & Stephanie. Providencia will
be taking on Edison for a school challenge on January 22.
McKinley Elementary School
McKinley Elementary School Chess Club recently
started on December 2, 2009 and in the short time Seth Alafetith has already
reached 2nd place in the chess club & Brandon Miller has reached 5th. Seth
is in 4th grade and Brandon is in 1st grade. Both of these boys have made
exceptional progress in the past 5 weeks. This could be a race to the top
between Seth & Brandon.
Stevenson Elementary School
Stevenson Elementary School now entering its 6th
year of doing chess has just recently started on January 13, 2010. After
doing a 2 out of 3 challenge both Jessie Avila & Dominic Flores
achieved a checkmate each and a draw. Jessie ended up with a club rating of 542
with Dominic not far behind with a club rating of 536. The tables could
turn at the next chess club meeting at Stevenson Elementary School.
Disney Elementary School
Disney Elementary is the school that can proudly
say they have the strongest top 10 out of all the schools. This school will be
competing against others in the month of February. Currently holding the top 3
spots are Narek Avetisyan with a club rating of 1116, Robert Stout with a club
rating of 986 and Cesar Cuevas with a club rating of 906. Kiet Hoang, Nicholas
Tokarev, & Max Gunner are edging closer & closer to the top 3 so there
could be some changes at the top at the next chess club meeting.
All of the schools are forming teams to compete in
the Southern California State Championships to be held on March 28th. We will
have to see which one of these Burbank Schools will be the top school in the
State.
